In late 2006, an umbrella network of Vietnamese NGOs, academic institutions and human rights advocates called GenComNet submitted the first ever NGO Shadow Report to the CEDAW Committee for consideration alongside Vietnam’s 5th and 6th combined report which they would be reviewing at their 37th Session in January 2007.
GenComNet was inspired to put together an alternative CEDAW report after attending a workshop on the role and impact NGOs can play in monitoring the implementation of the Convention. Their report focuses on seven key areas: 1) violence against women; 2) women’s participation in politics; 3) women and education; 4) women and health; 5) female labour in the informal economic sector; 6) rural women; and 7) women in the family.
The 2006 Shadow Report was completed with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland, UNIFEM, and Action Aid Viet Nam.
Vietnam NGO Shadow Report:
For some countries, more than one NGO shadow report may be submitted to the CEDAW Committee. These reports can be found on the International Women's Rights Action Watch - Asia Pacific (IWRAW-AP) website at http://www.iwraw-ap.org/resources/shadow_reports.htm. IWRAW-AP assists NGOs in channeling their Shadow Reports to the CEDAW Committee for consideration at Committee Sessions.
